I was considering applying resting restrictions wanted to know how everyone felt about it.  My current idea is to simply deny the ability to rest unless the player has food in their inventory.  1 unit of food would be consumed per rest.  Another possibility is the requirement of a bed roll.

I'm not really a big fan of restricting rest but I know a lot of people believe it creates a better balance in the game.

personally ... I think that you should be able to rest anywhere besides the cities ... and then in the cities resting is done at the inn in a special room you pay to access ...

Why don't you put the rest restiction on hours say the player can rest anytimes but has to wait 1hrs before he can rest again?

all thouse sound good.... i like the fact of restricting rest in some manner...

maybe the rest being every so many hours and you cant rest withen 1 or 2 areas from the citys and can rest in the cities

Like I said I don't care for restrictions at all.  I think it places an unfair penalty against pure magic users.  Technically I could rest anywhere I want to even if it isn't a safe place so restrictions are not very realistic.

I thought using food/provisions might be a good compromise.  I can rest as much as I like provided I have the necessary items.  This would be more in line with reality and require some preparation on the players part.  

Doing it in this manner is less restrictive on players who want action and not RP.

I could probably tie this into the crafting system as well.  If food is expensive in the stores players might be inclined to carry a skinning knife and acquire their food in the wild before questing.

this is one thing I don't like about NWN. a spell caster must rest to get spells back instead of like a mana meter that you can refill with potions. perhaps we can create a potions that will restore amounts of spells to that resting is less necessary for spell casters ... thus evening it out.

Realistically, there should be no restrictions on resting as you can rest whenever or wherever you want. Placing conditions on resting maybe fairer, it might not. I like the idea of having to have food, but I wouldn't let this stop anyone from resting. Resting without food for example, would give you the time you need to memorise spells or gain class abilities like "lay on hands" but without food you don't get the strength you need to recover HP's.
Also their should be an element of danger in resting in the wilderness, Random encouters etc, as in BG. Because the ability to rest constantly without interuption is unrealistic

Well currently you have a chance of having your rest interrupted in the wilderness, but it is low.  I could write a script that would record your pre-rest health and then check for food.  If you don't have food it could then apply damage, although it would be easier to just keep you from resting without food.

Maybe I should just leave it alone! Cheesy

I like the 'leave it alone' strategy.  For example, go into a NYC subway and its obvious you can pretty much sleep wherever you want.  And while the 1-2 hr wait makes some sense, it really just hurts spellcaster classes more than it would really add anything to the game.

i think we should leave it alone as well unless we come up with a potion that will regain spells ...
I know I am a spell caster and with no other way to regen spells ... I have to rely on resting ...
