Title: Player Leveling and Caps
Post by: perk31 on March 15, 2005, 10:13:22 PM
What are your thoughts on player leveling and caps if any?

I would like to see open leveling to level 20.  After that I would like for the next 10 levels to be received through predefined and scripted quests, most likely through the guilds and "government" reps.

The final 10 levels I would like to see awarded through DM managed quests only.

I think this allows good advancement for people who only want to dungeon crawl, maxing out at lvl 30 if they are willing to quest.  It will help keep epic level characters down to those who are willing to work for them, especially for levels higher than 30.

The scripted quests will not be simple quests that can be run quickly or without effort.  I envision these quests being important to the world, creating the perception of advancing the world, and leading into DM run campaigns which are the world shapers.

This progress can be further refined by requiring the player to achieve a certain amount of XP before they can receive the quests required for the next level.  Obviously we can require as many quests as we deem appropriate for each level, perhaps stopping XP accumulation until those required quests are complete.

well if possible then we can have it to where they stop at the edge of there lvl and then when a dm comes on and they see that that person wants to lvl up (possibley by sending a pm to a dm or posting it here on the forum) then a dm can start up an event for the said person or persons in order for them to get there lvl up

Might it create problems if someone is on during a time period there aren't any dms. I know  I'm having that trouble now with a 17th level character I have. There is a great deal of xp she needs to for the next level but the xp she gets from monster bashing is so low since she's such a high level character now that it's taking forever.

Most of the xp I get on my characters is from rping because that's what I enjoy doing. It was fine until they got new dms in diffent time zones than I am, so I rarely get the xp I use to. There was even an dmed event I stayed up late for recently that I haven't yet gotten the xp for because his comp crashed before he could hand it out. He said he would catch people ig, but guess what - he's in a different time zone and I'm not on when he is.  Just a thought on it - something to keep in mind.

there is also the idea of having a player get to lvl 20... but inorder to go "epic" you have to get approval and a dm can unlock it there the same when you hit 30

If we end up doing what I suggested lvl 20 through 30 would be automatic, handled through the scripting.

30 - 40 I would want to be gained through DM quests, but if there is a lack of DM's at that point then we would have to do something else.  I don't want to lock players out of advancement.

The problem with not getting advancement without a DM should be fairly easy to work around.  If nothing else, it can be scripted using an item that is always in your inventory.

Either way, if we do use some type of leveling system you won't have to worry about not getting your advancement.
